Trucks, freight and money control the transportation scene between Flensburg and Verona. The free competition of the carriers requires well considered route planning, tension-rich price competition and an optimal utilization of loading capacity. New events from the everyday life of the trucker always place the carriers in difficult situations. Prudent trades and -- like so often in the life -- a little luck bring maximum profit to the successful carrier, and with it the all important competitive edge.
This 1987 Spiel des Jahres winner is a good solid game. The rules are uncomplicated (but could use some clarification about order of certain actions and meanings of event cards) but provide a fairly interesting game. We found the game to be more active than typical turn-based games; players were involved and happily playing at a good speed.
Auf Achse involves acquiring contracts to deliver goods (a few dealt at game start, the rest bought at auction), moving your truck by dice rolls to a city to pick up containers according to a contract, and moving to destination cities for delivery, where you receive cash for the shipment. You can carry more than one load if you have room, and you can buy trailers which provide more room.
Play is lively and entertaining. Our only regret was that event cards did not come into play more often. However, while this would have added more unpredictability to the game, most of the event cards seem to be bad for the player, so players naturally avoid the event spaces. Adding more good cards and marking more of the spaces as event spaces might be fun.
