This is a fun little game that can be simple enough for non-gamers (very little to explain) and yet there is some strategy underneath that needs to be found which will keep the gamers there. You basically have 3 races, before each race you bid for poll position. After you get your cards and your car you go. Each card will move several of the cars at teh same time so you have to think, are those 3 spaces I will gain worth pushing my opponent over the finish line? I really enjoy this game. The re-play has been great so far.
This is a well done game. The components are a nice fit. The double-sided, mounted board works great. The little plastic cars are decent. The card quality is good. The rules are tight. There is even some play money to toss around. The game itself has an auction element, a race element, and card play--all nicely integrated. The one caveat is this: players can be spoilers in this game. When a player's car(s) finish the race, the player continues to play cards that can affect other players still racing. This is good when done for strategic reasons, but can be bothersome when done for spiteful reasons. Just a word of warning.
In this high quality reissue of the classic Kramer racing series, there is little not to like about the game. The simplistic nature of play with abundant strategy makes this a great game for the entire family. At the beginning of the game, players bid for their pole positions, then play is just a matter of playing movement cards from your dealt hand. However, each movement card moves all players' cars a certain amount! In this game, the phrase "playing your cards right" has maximum impact. It is a constant juggling act of maximizing your movement above the other players. A less complicated game than the [page scan/se=0217/sf=category/fi=stockall.asc/ml=20]Formula De series, but a more elegant game. The return of the choke points where you are sometimes forced into playing a particular movement card has turned off some people, but I see it as just another level of the strategy. Highly recommended for quick fun. Mayfair has intimated about creating more boards of other race tracks, and I hope to see it happen. Other Resources for Detroit-Cleveland Grand Prix:
