The Emperor Napoleon had achieved his greatest victory only four months earlier at Jena-Auerstadt, crushing the Prussian army and state. But now, in the dead of winter, Prussia's ally, the Russians, under General Levin Bennigsen forced the Emperor to roust his victorious but weary troops from their winter quarters and set the stage for a confrontation between the two continental giants. Would this too end in another stunning victory for the Emperor of the French or would a different outcome await Napoleon in the snows of East Prussia?
This game uses th same mechancis as Eagles of the Empires: Napoleon in the Desert. I find both very enjoyable and am really impressed with the system. It has a wonderful way of eliminating charts and tables but still keeps the mechanics adequately sophisticated. The movement and map design are innovative and excellent. The system takes into account several aspects that I think are vital for this era: the leadership role in activating units, the emphasis on the infantry division, the use of artillery in both supporting and bombardment roles, and emphsis of terrain features vs arbitrary hexes. I highly recommend this game especially since it is so quick and easy to learn.
Also, I have recently discovered Avalanche Press and have been immensely impressed with their products. I highly recommend their products and their company.
Wow... I'm a long time wargamer and I just had one of the worst gaming experiences EVER playing this dog (and that's certainly an insult to canines!).
Problems:
1. Rules are a mess. We came up with 27 questions that were not adressed in the rules and discovered that Avalanche doesn't maintain a website that shares errata. Nice...
2. Boredom. Move pieces forward (assuming that we were doing it semi-correctly since the rules are so bad), roll a handfull of dice and hope for the best. Real fun...
3. There are several units whose icons aren't explained. Is it a special cavalry? A special infantry? Why is it marked like this?
This game was my friend Jim's copy. He put it up for auction on ebay the same afternoon we finished, hoping some sucker will buy it. Pulling our toenails out would have been more fun. AVOID THIS DOG AT ALL COSTS!!!
