You remember Outburst: Your team hears a Topic--like "Basic Ice Cream Flavors." Now yell out every name you can think of. But no matter how wonderful or numerous or humorous your answers are, you only get credit for the names that are on the Topic card!
In Reverseburst, you're given the answers. Now guess the Topic! The fewer clues you need, the further ahead you move.
In Challenge Burst, both teams bet how many "correct" answers they can come up with. The team that wins the bid has to make good on their bet--or their rivals surge ahead the amount of their bid!
Ultimate Outburst. It's the classic Game of Verbal Explosions time 3... for 3 times the fun!
Outburst has long been one of the best team party games around. The rules take 30 seconds to explain (hear a topic and scream possible answers) and everyone, from children to adults, can contribute.
Well, Ultimate Outburst has taken the classic, removed the problems, and added wonderful twists.
First of all, the 'pass' tokens have been removed. No longer can a team pass a horrid category to the other team, force them to play it, and then pass the next awful category to them again. Nope. You just get a card and play it. This makes the game flow much more quickly and avoids any sort of 'strategizing' (which really isn't necessary in the basic form of Outburst).
So, each team gets three cards of the traditional category-list version of Outburst and does the best they can.
Then the twists begin. Each team's next three turns are Reverseburst sessions. In this version, the timer is flipped, and answers are read off of the card while the active team attempts to determine the category (much like the old $25,000 pyramid game). If they're stumped, they ask for another answer ('hit me'). This continues until they come up with the theme or the timer runs out. Scoring is given as 10 points minus one point for each answer (hint) needed to come up with the solution.
And after those three-cards-per-team are gone, the final stretch run commences--the Challengeburst.
Challenges are 'Name that Tune' versions of Outburst. The teams hear the category and the trailing team states how many of the items they believe they can come up with. Then the other team has the opportunity to bid higher. Finally, the winner of this auction must put up or shut up. If they succeed in making their bid, they score the number of points of their bid (no extras for making more than the bid). But if they come up short, the opposing team gets the bid value and moves up the scoring track accordingly. This phase of the game continues until someone reaches the finish line on the scoring board.
So, where Outburst was always a wonderful game for all ages, this version is 100-fold the game of its predecessor. Add it to your collection now.
Ultimate Outburst is one of those sequel games that improves upon its predecessor. This version of the party game adds two new rounds to the original game, and takes away the stupid passing option from the original game.
Although occasionally one team will get saddled with more difficult categories than the other team, it is all resolved in ChallengeBurst. The round of bidding is the best addition in Ultimate Outburst. Knowing answers doesn't necessarily win this round. This round is all about bluffing your opponents up to a larger number than they can actually achieve.
I really like the concept of the Outburst games. They make for great party games, and Ultimate Outburst is probably the best of the bunch. The only downside to these games (as I said in my review of Outburst) is that they contain some time-sensitive information that loses relevancy and accuracy over time. This could be solved by issuing expansion packs of category cards. Instead of doing that, though, they just make a new version of the game (each time with a different style of card reader and cards so you can't combine old and new).
Even so, anyone looking for an enjoyable party game this is a good one to get. If you liked the original Outburst game, you will love Ultimate Outburst.
