No matter where jewels are worn: on your tongue, in your ears, or around the neck of your favorite pet, they are still pretty and valuable. The players are buyers and sellers of these beautiful items. On your turn, you put new jewels in your shop window for all to see. You put the most precious items in your safe until you can sell them (in groups of four) and buy from shop windows when the right items are there. In the end, the player who has earned the most money buying and selling these pretty baubles wins the game. Klunker is a fast, exciting card game for the whole family.
My friends and I absolutely love this game. I've played [page scan/se=0027/sf=category/fi=stockall.asc/ml=20]Bohnanza as well, and really like both in their own right.
At first, I didn't really see much strategy in it either, but after playing on and off for several months, it's pretty obvious that there are different styles of play for different people. For example, one of the women in my group always plays every card from her hand--if she's not going to play it to her vault, she puts it in her window. Even in games where she ends up taking her own window, she still wins. Often. It's frightening.
I think that there needs to be a good mix in this game of being a bit stingy and a bit generous. Put out too much of a good thing and you help someone too much. Put out too little of a good thing and you get stuck taking your own.
In my group, we have taken to calling this game 'Schaufenster' from the word in German written on the shopwindow cards. 'Ah... now that's good schaufenster,' we say, when we see a window that looks particularly attractive. Maybe you have to be there.
Klunker is an easy to learn game. You have to balance collecting jewels and preventing your opponents from collecting sets as well. The balance is very good. The player interaction and ease of play makes it a highly enjoyable game.
Klunker is by Uwe Rosenberg, the designer responsible for some of the more popular and unusual card games on the market, including Bohnanza and its progeny. Klunker is similar to Bohnanza in some fundamental ways, but manages to turn much of that game's mechanics on their ear. Whether or not this is a good thing is strictly a matter of opinion.
This is a much more strategic game than Bohnanza, since players do not cut deals with each other for the available cards. There are tougher decisions to be made here as to when to drop out of filling your safe in favor of drawing a low numbered purchase card. Players must also decide what they will display in their shop window--whether to make it something another player would really want, or whether to 'poison the well.'
Luck of the draw is a very big factor in this game, and is more apparent with more players, but the game actually seems to run more quickly with more players, and more than one game could easily be played and scores from each game totalled.
While I doubt this will 'convert' many Bohnanza fans away from their One True Cardgame, I do think that it is a good solid game that deserves a place on any player's game shelf.
