ADB (the original designers) are now the publishers of this Star Trek space combat wargame (concentrating on pre-movie classic Trek and the original cartoon series). The Basic Set includes basic rules for energy-allocation, tactical maneuver and combat with Federation, Klingon, Romulan and Kzinti ships. Boxed, with a 224pp rulebook, 64pp SSD book and 216 color counters.
Let's get the bad news out of the way: while this box has everything you need in it to play thousands of different games of Star Fleet Battles, there's no way you're starting here. The rules to Star Fleet are learned by oral tradition, not the reference-style manual you'll find in this box. They're quite complex, and learning them takes a while.
That being said, this is one of the best strategy games ever. There are enough complexities in this game that you could spend the rest of your days on it and not see them all, and they're all there for a reason. Better news: Star Fleet players tend to be some of the best kind of intellectuals around, so you'll be in good company.
Get yourself a copy of this game. Just get a copy of the Cadet Training Handbook first, if you don't have a Star Fleet sensei.
