I won't re-state the gameplay as the previous reviewer does a great job.
This game is kind of like "Memory" except some of the cards turned over cause other cards to get "locked" until a solution is found. This adds an exciting variable to the traditional memory style game.
My son is in kindergarten and he really enjoyed playing this game! We ordered three co-op games at once, and this was his favorite (followed by "Mountaineering" and then "Max"). It's fun to collect the treats in the basket, and solve the problems.
One issue: for non-readers it is hard to know what the solutions are. Instead of printing solutions in words, small icons should have been used.
I also liked the fact that some unusual vocabulary is used: rose-hips, chamomile, and stinging nettle.
As with all the co-op games we have acquired, the components are a bit thin. But an enjoyable experience for young children.
This is a very relaxing, cooperative game which all my kids (ages 2 1/2, 4 and 7) enjoy playing. Each player has a flat basket which shows pictures of the three items they will try to pick in the woods. The board is a scene of woods and meadows and has paths running through it which divide it into smaller areas which will each hold 2 to 4 upside-down cards. On your turn, you get to turn over two cards. Hopefully they will be the fruits, nuts or herbs which you are seeking. If you turn over a danger card (for example, hot sun) no players can go exploring in that area again until someone finds a remedy card for that danger (first aid cream, water, hiking clothes or a big hat). For younger kids, when you turn over a remedy card you can leave it face up so that it is easy to use when needed. The more challenging version of the game has you turn the remedy cards face down again.
There are some decisions to be made and, because it is a cooperative game, our children discuss strategies with each other. Should they use the first available remedy for a danger? Some dangers have multiple remedies...but if you use your hiking clothes to solve the danger of the hot sun, then you will have a problem looking for berries where there is stinging nettle because hiking clothes are the only remedy for stinging nettle. You don't need to point this out to the children (let them have the excitement of discovering it for themselves), but it is better to wait and use the big hat or the water bottle for the hot sun. Good thinking game for young kids.
Most of the time, my kids are able to successfully find all the tasty things pictured on their baskets. It adds up to 15 minutes of peaceful and collaborative play which leaves them satisfied. The game is recommended for children 5 and up, but my 2 and 1/2 year old loves this game and already knows what remedies are needed for each danger. The goals of the game are very easy for even very young children to relate to.
The only reason that I am not giving this game 5 stars is that the cards are not as sturdy as I would like them to be. It would be nice if the company could make thicker cards that have a protective coating. Or, perhaps they could include a second sheet of cards so that you could replace those that show wear and tear after being played with by kids. Overall, though, a very well designed game and highly recommended.
