PanzerZug is essentially a card game that pits up to six players, representing the Allied forces, against the railroad system of the Third Reich. The players are in a competition for points, which are awarded for destroying various types of trains and freight yards. The components of PanzerZug are very functional, but not fancy. They consist of nineteen sheets of cardstock you must cut out (to create two decks of cards), and six aircraft displays. The graphics are all printed in black, and are a mixed bag of very nice actual train photos to chintzy line drawings. There are four pages of easily understood rules, and you must also supply your own six-sided die. But, if you pass up this game due to its lackluster components, youre missing out on a fun time.
Play consists of fitting your plane, then flying an attack mission. The three planes provided (Mustang, Thunderbolt, and Typhoon) each have different abilities and can be equipped differently, but none of them have a great advantage over the others. The ordnance and fuel is obtained randomly by drawing from the Action deck, and placed upon the planes display card. As missions are flown, these cards are consumed, and the player must take time to refit. A very simple, yet elegant, simulation of supply. Likewise, the targets are drawn from the Zug (train) deck, and range from troop carriers to armored scout cars to freight yards, with each having a variety of defensive capabilities, point values, and required damage needed to destroy them. Combat is a simple die roll, modified by type of target and type of weapon used (bombs, rockets, cannons, or machine guns).
Now, you didnt think it was going to be that easy did you? Even though the players represent historical allies, you dont want your compatriot to hog all of the glory. Within the Action deck are cards to play on your opponents that delay missions, or run their sortie into German escort fighters, fog, trains escaping into a tunnel, etc. An Me262 on your tail can ruin your whole day! However, being shot down just removes all Action cards from the aircraft display, thus forcing a couple of turns of refitting again.
PanzerZug is fast playing, very entertaining, easy to get into, and has everything for the warmongering or railroad enthusiast: Its got guns, bombs, planes, AND trains. What more could you ask for!
