The players have to take into consideration not only how to increase their own provisions but also how to help the hedgehog care for its poor friends so that the game can be won. If the players only think about themselves without thinking of the common good, it may be that the hedgehog can't fulfill its task and then they all lose the game. The players throw the dice one after the other: if a fruit appears on the dice it is stuck into its spiny bristles. If there are already two fruit of that kind, the player can decdide whether to keep the fruit or give it to the hedgehog. If the dormouse or the robin appears on the dice, the hedgehog is moved to the place of the animal in question. But watch out that Doctor Hedgehog doesn't lose any fruit while crossing the bridge. As soon as the hedgehog arrives at the friend's spot, it gives the animal in question the fruit it needs to recover. Some luck with the dice and clever decisions for the common good are needed so that the hedgehog can help its friends. A dice game of cooperation where there can still be a winner. This game is designed to illustrate the tension between a competitive and cooperative game experience. Players are trying to grab the most fruit for themselves, but players must also give fruit to Doctor Hedgehog so that he can cure his patients. If all players are selfish and keep the fruit for themselves, rather than generously giving to the Doctor, then the game can end prematurely when he runs out of fruit, and everybody loses. I find the game to be somewhat dull so I can't give it my strongest recommendation, but I think it teaches an important lesson about the tradeoff between selfish and selfless behavior and I'm really glad I have the game. Beautiful components, and my kids, for the moment, find the game to be engaging.

Dr. Hedgehog brings fruit to the poor door mouse and the robin. If the players are lucky with the dice, move the hedgehog carefully along the track and none of the precious titbits rolls off its bristly back, together they will help the friends of the hedgehog recover. A special game for 4+ years.

Like a lot of Haba games, this one is a little pricey. But you get quality in both the game bits and the game design. Doktor Igel provides an interesting challenge. Players must work together or they risk losing as a group. You can win by collecting the most pieces of fruit. But be too selfish and you and all the other players may lose. Very interesting game design. Roll a die. If it come up fruit, take what it shows from the tree for yourself or place it firmly on Doktor Igel. If it shows the mouse or bird, push and drag the Doktor along the path to the creature's home to drop off the fruit it needs. If a piece of fruit falls off as the Doktor moves, it goes back into the game box. If you don't have the fruit it needs when you arrive, all players lose and the game is over. Moving the good Doktor over the bridges adds some excitement to the game. I am interested professionally in how children learn risk taking. This issue and the theme of responding to the sick animals makes Doktor Igel a must-have for the family game collection. Plus, you get to play with Doktor Igel, the cutest game piece I've seen.
