These friendly aliens offer them limited aid and will guide them home if they can meet the high standards required for entrance into the Galactic Advisory Council.

Now you can take the role of a Starfarer and daringly brave the unknown reaches of space! Battle dastardly pirates, explore & colonize new worlds, strike vital trade agreements, performing missions of mercy, rescues, and interventions, all while improving and preparing your Starship for the journey home. Fun resource / exploration game
July 21, 2007

I have never played Settlers of Catan and from what I have read probably would not like it. However, Starship Catan is a wonderful two player exploration game. Every player controls a starship and travels "through" a deck of game, i.e. the top cards are turned over until you either decide to end the turn or run out of fuel (based on a die roll and the number of boosters your starship currently has). As you turn over the card you'll encounter planets where you can start a colony (provided you have a colony ship) or trading stations. But beware: pirates are lurking in the deck and you'll either have to pay a ransom or fight your way out. There are mission cards telling you where to deliver goods which will be rewarded with victory points. First person to reach a set number of points wins. The fun part is being able to upgrade your ship but of course that has to be balanced with saving money for trades.

This is one of my favorite games - the only downside is that it has a strong Memory component to it since you need to remember what planets are located in which deck.

Low interaction, high tension!

There are so many Catan games. And they get better and better. I start liking the 'clones' more like the original. In this one there is not a lot of interaction between the players but it has a lot of tension.

Vague resemblance to Settlers and Starfarers
July 11, 2003

When I first played this game I did not like it. At first blush it seemed to rely on the same production mechanism as Settlers of Catan, and Starfarers of Catan. You have colony planets that produce goods much like Settlers and Starfarers, but the game does not rely on this mechanism to bring goods into the game.

After you lose the mindset that it is similiar to Settlers of Catan, it is a much better game.

There are several stacks of cards, each turn you 'explore' a stack of cards. Find a planet that sells goods for 1 or 2 coins, buy them, and sell those goods at a planet that offers 4 or 5 coins for those goods. Remember what stack each card is in, this is how goods and money are brought into the game.

This is not intended to be an exhauative review. I only mention this one small point to help new players who may be expecting a game similiar to the original. There are many more aspects to this game. There are some tough decisions to made, there is some combat (although not with the other player), there is competition with the other player to get advanced spaceship components, there is some player interaction, and there is some luck involved.

Good game. Buy it if you play 2 player games at all.
