You are invited to the land of milk and honey, where the King is hosting a grand feast. He is so humble and such a good host, that he waits until all have eaten before taking his portion. But, be a good guest, not a greedy one, who tries to get larger portions than even the king. A simple, but enchanting game!
Not as silly as it might at first appear, King Lui is a light fast game with just the right level of challenge for a short gaming session's entertainment. The theme also works quite well with the mechanics, which is not always the case for light games like this. Not just filler.
This one had a ton of promise, and I don't want light gamers to shy away because of this review, because it *is* entertaining, however if you are a strategy nut, it is not for you.
The major lack of strategy lies in the fact that you can never have substantial control of the game play, which makes choosing items rather random. Will it collect dust on my shelf? Probably not, since it is ok to fill up time while waiting to play a deeper game, but if given the chance to choose a different game to buy instead of this one, I probably would...
King's Breakfast is definitely a filler game that will last 10 minutes between bigger games. For a filler, however, it's pretty good. There is a nice risk aspect to the game, as you must consider if a big group of food is just right or too big. Additionally, even if you guess correctly about the food group, the other players have chances to knock you down by making the King's portion smaller, thus making your large portion worthless. I think families would also enjoy this game, as it's easy to learn, quick, and has brightly colored cards.
The only real problem with the game, and it's a small one, is that the penalty for having an oversized portion is not that substantial. By having a small penalty, it removes some of the tension that goes along with risk. In this case, if you guess wrong, it's no big deal. Other than that though, this is a good way to spend 10 minutes. After that, you'll be ready to move on to something else.
