Proclaim! is the thoughtfully ambiguous word association game for 4 to 10 players.
Players take turns giving up to 3 clues that will lead others to guess the Proclaim! word. The earlier the word is guessed and the fewer people that guess correctly, the more points that are awarded to the clue giver and correct guessers.
Clues must be clever enough to lead players to different possible answers to maximize their score. For additional points, players may "Proclaim!" if they are certain they are correct. Landing on a "Proclaim!" square can put your fate in another player's hands!
The game involves giving clues that allow the other players to guess a word from the card. But it isn't that simple. As the clue-giver, the fewer people who guess the word, the more points you and the correct guesser get. There are extra points if everyone guesses a different word. But if you can't get someone to guess the word after three rounds, you lose points. Players can get extra points if they are sure they know the answer. Scoring depends on how many people are playing, and in which round the word is guessed. There are easy to use scoring cards, and the rules are easy to follow.
One of the best things about this game is that everyone is involved in every round. The clue-giver, who rotates for every new word, has to think the hardest, but it is really fun to try to come up with clues that will lead to both a variety of guesses, and a correct guess. The other players get 30 seconds each round to write down their guess.
The game never seems to lag or become boring. No long waits while the players figure out puzzles or make up definitions. Most of the words were really well suited to a broad age range, so even kids of 10 (maybe even younger) can play. The words seemed very well chosen so it was fun, but not too difficult to come up with clues. While there is a board with player tokens, you don't really have to all sit at a table to play. We all sit around the living room in the comfy chairs, with a couple of players close enough to the board on the coffee table to move everyone's tokens.
It is hard to find a game that is challenging, fast moving, easy for the whole family to play, and doesn't give a big advantage to someone with a huge vocabulary or skill with words. Proclaim! meets all these goals, and is great fun.
