Pleasant surprise!
December 28, 2005
Frankly, I avoided this game when I first saw it on the shelf. Although it was nominated for the Spiel des Jahres (2005) and has excellent design pedigree, it looked simplistic and I'm not a fan of roll and moves. However, when looking to pick up a new game to play with non-gamers, I bought it after all. Before we were half-way thru the first game it was apparent that I had underestimated this game. The design is elegant, with nearly every die roll causing a dilemma. At times you hope for high rolls to escape from negative points while at others you simply wish you didn't have to move at all. My game group, which prefers meaty "gamer's games", was smitten and clearly as pleasantly surprised as I had been (causing a run at the local shop!). I've played That's Life! with both 3 and 5 players, several times each, and found it played well with either number of players. Heartily recommended!
