This is a wonderful revision of Blokus which plays well with 2, 4, AND 3 players because of the "trigon" board which has hexagonal symmetry and 6 equally spaced starting places for the players' first pieces. Three players can start at equally spaced locations around the board. When four play, each person has one opponent adjacent, and another farther away (the last opponent is across the board). When two play, each takes 2 colors, and you start the game as if for 4 players. Also when three play, you omit the outermost ring of spaces (they are shaded differently) so that space is as scarce as when 4 people play.

I don't remember the rules of original Blokus well enough, but in Blokus Trigon they give 15 extra points if you can play all your pieces on the board, and 5 extra points if you play the single triangle last. In addition, because intersections consist of 6 triangles coming together, there are more opportunities to cross through opponents' linked pieces.

This is a good family game because even my 6 yr old daughter can understand the rules and play. To make it more competitive and give younger kids a better chance, we have made up some handicapping rules (kind of like in Go) where the youngest kid can place two additional big pieces (6 triangles) before we start, and other kids can place one additional piece. This makes it easier for them to get rid of their harder pieces, and they have a better chance of reaching the 15 point bonus for getting all pieces on the board. You could adjust this even finer and use the 4 or 5 triangle pieces for handicapping.

Not deep strategy, but enjoyable for just about all ages and pretty to watch as well.
