Invest in the future with Take Stock, the power-brokering card game where players are the movers-and-shakers manipulating the stock market. Will you put all your hopes and dreams on one big winner, or play it safe with a variety of investments? But, look out! The market can close early, crash, or freeze depending on the clever play of your opponents!
Each player collects stock certificates in five stocks, (Crispyflake Corn Cereal Co., Glittering Gems Ltd., Zeta-Chip Technology Ltd., Arctic Oil Drilling Co., and Movie Madness Distributors), that they hope will have a high price when the market closes. The goal of the game is to accumulate the highest score after four rounds of play.
In Take Stock, you compete with other players to control the "stock market", represented by five different numbered suits of cards (entertainment, technology, food, oil, and gems). Each turn, you can either raise the price of a stock, invest in a stock, save a "market event" card for later, or draw two event cards and play one immediately.
Take Stock is a well-balanced game in that there are a number of different strategies you can use, and each strategy has been delicately balanced against the others. Want to go ballistic with market events to control the pace of the game? Great, but you had better remember to invest in some stock before the market closes, and keep the prices of your investments high. But don't reveal your investments too early, or others will be able to crush your stocks with their own market events. Don't want to reveal *any* of your investments? Not a problem; you can use stock options at the end of the round instead. But you are only allotted a few per game, so use them wisely.
Because of the wide variety of strategies you can use, and the fact that there are four rounds in each game, it's fun to try a new strategy each round to keep your opponents guessing. You can even build up a war chest of market event cards. But watch out: if the Market Close event is drawn, your arsenal is lost.
This is a very good game of set building (not collection). Cards depict one of 5 stocks numbered 1 to 12. You can place a stock in front of yourself or place it to the common collection on the table. Your score is the cards in front of you (0 to 3 points) X the cards on the table (1 to 12 points). It seems simple but Mr. Hunt has thrown in a bunch of other cards in the mix to throw things off. From another deck you can play or store cards that double, triple or quadruple the score but at a price. There are cards that can freeze the common stock price. There are cards that can lower the value of any stock or take away a doubler. There are cards that can crash the stocks. There are cards that can mess with everyones hand size for the better or worse.
The mechanics that control all of this are very well playtested. You always have a lot of choices and even when things go wrong there are ways to minipulate your score even after a round is over. All in all this is a very vibrant card game.
