Space Alert is a team survival game. Players take on the role of a crew of space explorers sent out through hyperspace to survey a dangerous sector of the Galaxy.The spaceship automatically maps the sector in 10 minutes. The crew's task is to defend the ship until the mission is complete. If they succeed, the ship brings back valuable data. If they fail... it is time to train a new crew.
Space Alert is not a typical board game. Players do not compete against each other. Instead, they work together against the challenge presented by the game. The difficulty of this challenge can be chosen by the players themselves. Completing the most difficult missions requires close teamwork.
Co-op games can be a mixed bag. Some are fun, some feel like drudgery. Your actual enemy in this game is not demons or attacking ships or space monsters ... it's time. This mechanic is a fabulous formula for fun!
Hint: if you're playing somewhere without a CD player, rip the sound tracks to your iPhone or iPod with external speaker. In a quiet room, it's loud enough to work just fine.
I had some great fun with this game at the Swedish games convention Gothcon 2009. Your main task is to give instructions to your crew members under time pressure. At the same time you need to communicate with your fellow player about what your doing. The game is a great exercise in cooperation and communication and fun at the same time. The only drawback is that it requires plenty of players (around four or five), and a CD-player. But with the right numbers of players and the right equipment it is highly recommended.
I owned this game for a while and tried to play it with a bunch of my normal gamer friends and no one was able to catch on on how this game all worked together besides me. This quickly turned into a how to manage people game vs a fun cooperative game.
I had to trade this one away.
