It's the moment of truth in your quest to destroy the Evil magic Key that is coveted by two Wizards: An Evil Wizard who wants to possess its powers, and a Good Wizard who wants to destroy it. The Evil Wizard has disguised himself to look just like the Good Wizard, so who do you give the Key to? Choose quickly, one of your trusted guards is secretly a Traitor!
Andrew Looney's card game is a double-dealing deception adventure for 4-10 players. Luck determines your path, but your cunning determines the outcome. The first player to collect 10 treasure points wins!
I can't say enough good about this game. At first, everyone will be confused and uncertain how to proceed, since the game leaves figuring out who the traitor is up to you, providing only a few guidelines. It's always good for a couple of laughs with new players that give themselves away.
The game really starts to shine after a few rounds, when cagey, paranoid opponents shift their eyes around the table, scrutinizing their opponents for the slightest sign of deception with an intensity that would shame a high-stakes poker player. However the tension doesn't last long, and the rounds are short enough to keep things from getting boring, and the scoring is random enough that you can have an unexpected (but not undeserved!) win. Getting to play a different character each round keeps things interesting, you're forced to develop a different sort of perception, or deception for each.
This is definitely a game where the better you know the people you're playing with, the more nuanced and fun it becomes. I especially like to play it with a few bottles of wine circulating, all the better to loosen the tongues of those accursed keyholders. In Vino Veritas!
