This out-of-print game is from the same fertile minds that created Cosmic Encounter, the best game of the twentieth century (in my humble opinion). Quirks is a game of creating your own coterie of flora and fauna in an attempt to become the top dog/cat/dinosaur/whatever in each of three ecological niches.

The game is primarily a card game, with players melding cards to create a plant, an herbivore, and a carnivore. Each beautifully illustrated card shows a particular characteristic, such as teeth or stinging tail. A plant or animal is a combination of three characteristics, each of which is rated for its importance in each of several habitats.

On each player's turn, a marker moves along a track from one habitat to another. Players try to gain the upper hand when the habitat is favorable by challenging the top critter or plant for its spot. Since the importance of each characteristic varies and is not completely known to the players, this is something of an informed crap shoot.

The game is not a classic like Cosmic Encounter, but is definitely one of the most innovative games of its day. The two expansions that came out added more traits to the mix, but did not change the gameplay.

This is definitely the precursor for current games like Ursuppe and Evo, where players customize their own creatures. It was fun then, and it would be almost as fun now. Recommended.
