Reach in the bag to find the puzzle pieces that fit your bedroom game board. Try to distinguish between the different puzzle pieces and decide which one feels like the size and shape of a piece you need. If you pull out a monster, don't be scared... You take charge, and the monsters will take off!
Being afraid of monsters is a normal part of growing up. Go Away Monster! encourages kids to conquer that fear by acting it out and taking control. It also lets them experience some of the apprehension and excitement in deciding what is real and what is imaginary.

The perfect starter game for two reasons. For one, it's cooperative and lends itself to tweaking to suit your child's mood (they take all the turns, you do, etc...). Two, putting the monsters somewhere allows for a lot of silliness that keeps kids engaged. Of course, my son likes to put the monsters in the bed (rename Welcome Monster?) but that also shows how the game lends itself to creativity. He's just 3 and doesn't have the patience yet for Candyland, etc. The only other game he'll finish right now is the flower game from Ravensburger's 4 First Games but that's more of a 'quiet time' game. Go Away Monster gets repeated requests.
If you are a parent of a young child (less than 4 or 5 years old) and you want to start getting them into games already, Go Away Monster! is a great place to start! The five stars deserve an asterisk because it is five stars for the proper audience... very young kids.
My two year old requests this game almost everyday and we play it several times each week. She requested it recently and so we brought it out for a game with the whole family... mom, dad and the two sisters. The four year old prefers Froggy Boogie or Gulo Gulo, but will happily play Go Away Monster too.
There isn't a lot of "game" here, but there is a lot of "fun." Everyone is just filling up their room with furniture and getting rid of the monsters. For me, the best part of this game is the smile of anticipation that appears when it's my two year old's turn to draw a tile from the bag. And, when someone else reaches into the bag, how she covers her eyes with both hands, smiles and says, "I hope it isn't a monster." My four year old plays along too and does quite enjoy yelling "Go Away Monster!" when a monster comes from the bag.
This almost isn't even a "game" because it is so simple. And, although you can play it like a competitive game, I find it works best in the cooperative format (at least for us).
We got this game for our 2.5-year-old daughter, and we brought it to a game night where lots of people have kids in the 2-4 age range. Usually the kids just run wild at game night and play with the host kids' toys while the adults play games, but Go Away Monster got at least 15 plays over four hours or so. The 4-year-old liked feeling for pieces with the right shape, while the 2-year-olds just liked throwing the monsters in the monster pit and finding the right places in their rooms to put their pieces. The length of the game is great for short attention spans, and it's great for teaching turn-taking. This is a much better first game than the "standards" like Candyland and Chutes and Ladders. Even the adults who got roped into playing had fun.
