In prehistoric times hunters caught game by following their footprints. In the game, players try to make tricks to get bear, wolf, wild boar and wild sheep cards. In the first three game turns, the number of tricks is predetermined. In the fourth and last game turn, each player must win as many tricks as possible.
In addition to the basic game, there are two optional rules for an even more challenging game.
Trump, Tricks, Game! is a trick-taking game that is played in 4 phases. First, you display the 4 trump cards, showing which suit will be trump during each phase.
In the first 3 phases, you can only collect 3 tricks exactly (4 tricks with 3 players). Once you win the set number of tricks during a phase, your cards can't win more tricks. The 5-9 cards of each suit have footprints on them (ranging from 1-3). After each phase, you multiply the number of different suits from cards you collected times your total footprints. After each phase, the cards in your tricks become your hand for the next phase.
In the fourth phase, there is no limitation on the number of tricks you can win, but you try to collect "victory points" based on the suit of the cards you win in the last phase (wolf=1, mouflon=2, boar=3, bear=4). The player who gets the most points from all phases wins.
Trump, Tricks, Game! is a good game, and it may eventually join my current favorite trick-taking games: Rage, Margin for Error & Wizard. We particularly liked its new mechanics of playing 4 different phases in one game, setting the number of tricks you can win during each of the first 3 phases, and using the cards you won as your hand for the next phase. Our only concerns about the game were that we felt like long-term planning was somewhat difficult, and there were large point swings at times. However, I'm a big fan of trick-taking games, & this one is different enough to earn a place in my collection.
