Product Description

Relic is a board game in which two to four players each assume the role of a powerful hero from the Warhammer 40,000 universe and bravely venture forth to shield the Antian Sector from certain doom. By completing missions and defeating enemies, characters compete to gain rewards and experience, furthering their chance of being the first to defeat whatever evil lies beyond the Warp rift.

Building on the foundations of the Talisman system, Relic is an adventure game in which seemingly straightforward choices mask scores of possibilities. For those who haven't played the classic fantasy adventure game Talisman, this means that on each turn, a player rolls a single six-sided die before moving his playing piece that number of spaces clockwise or counter-clockwise around the region (outer, middle, or inner) of the board it currently occupies. That player then draws a card or cards to see what he's encountered, pitting his heroic persona against foul enemies, dangerous locations, and fantastic strangers. And all the while, these intrepid heroes rise in power, as they work their way toward the ultimate goal at the center of the board.

Talisman in Warhammer 40K is great!
November 15, 2015

Warhammer 40K Relic gives a great overhaul to the classic game Talisman. While I have only played Talisman a few times, the base system is still here and works very well and is adapted to the Warhammer 40K universe very well. The game itself will take a few tries to understand the base game if you have not played Talisman before. The game board is highly detailed and colourful depiction of the Warhammer universe. I've had some trouble getting mine to lie flat (more so than other games) which is slightly annoying when your game pieces slide around, but is very much a minor issue. You randomly pick your character from a stack of 10 (in the core set, more are added in expansions), drawing 2 then picking 1. The characters are nicely different with wildly different and game changing abilities and starting attributes. Each of the characters has a bust which is put on top of a stand to make your game piece. They are rather hard to put on the base and require quite a bit of strength to put on (especially at the beginning). For the end game, there are different scenarios for you to fight over with your friends. These are held at the middle of the game board with three tiers leading to the center. You go around the first and second tier battling enemies of the Imperium to level up your character to go into the final tier and complete the game ending mission. Five scenarios are included with the base game. These are good for quite a few playthroughs, but do get old after a while. However, these don't play much into the game (other than changing the rules slightly) until the endgame. This is where the most annoying part of the game comes in. While you wander around the tiers leveling up you can sometimes be stuck on either the first or second tier longer than you want, waiting to role just right to move to the next tier. This can create a tedious five or ten (once I was stuck on the second tier for almost 20 minutes). There are cards which let you move directly there, but if you are not lucky enough to draw them, the game can go on a bit too long. Also the game can be a bit overwhelming for your level 1-3 characters, but both this and the navigation difficulty are minor issues opposed to the great base gameplay this game offers.

All in all, this is one of my favorite games currently on my shelf. It's great fun for 2 to 4 players (works well with all numbers) when you don't want a game where direct player confrontation is wanted. An expansion, Nemesis, added a PVP mode, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. I give this game a hearty recommendation for anyone who wants a fun time with some friends and is willing to take a few hours to learn the rules of Talisman or Talisman fans who also love Warhammer 40K and want that flavor in their gaming sessions.
