Product Description

The Resistance: Avalon pits the forces of Good and Evil in a battle to control the future of civilization. Arthur represents the future of Britain, a promise of prosperity and honor, yet hidden among his brave warriors are Mordred's unscrupulous minions. These forces of evil are few in number but have knowledge of each other and remain hidden from all but one of Arthur's servants. Merlin alone knows the agents of evil, but he must speak of this only in riddles. If his true identity is discovered, all will be lost.

The Resistance: Avalon is a standalone game, and while The Resistance is not required to play, the games are compatible and can be combined.

by A Gamer
Deceivers Delight
February 14, 2016

While Avalon is very good for what it is (a Werewolf/Resistance/Mafia/Bang! type game where you are given a secret identity and two teams try to influence each other without revealing themselves) I dislike all of these games and Avalon is no exception. Every one of these games relies on deception and accusation (all within the scope of the game), and I am very uncomfortable with lying and accusing so I don't enjoy it. These are also behaviors that I would rather not encourage in my child who is frequently at my game nights, so that's another factor. A friend commented recently that "Avalon is a game where you feel dirty if you win, and dirty if you lose" and I agree.

All that aside, if you do enjoy this type of game, Avalon is certainly one of the best versions out there. Players don't die or get eliminated until the end of the game so everyone remains involved, and there are optional special characters that you can play with to add some interesting twists (Percival knows who Merlin is, and the Lady of the Lake can learn the good or evil nature of one other player after select rounds). Evil also gets a last ditch effort to win (if they haven't already) by trying to assasinate Merlin at the end of the game.

It is also a good game for a large player count (6-10 players) which can be hard to find, so that is something to consider, but I greatly prefer Codenames if I need a game for a large number of players.
