An expansion that works
December 26, 1998

Please note that the Bohnanza expansion is not playable by itself; you must already have the original Bohnanza deck. What the additional 50 cards in the expansion accomplish is simply to add three new types of beans to the original eight in order to make the game playable for 6-7. (The original deck plays for 3-5.) It must be said that an excellent job has been done keeping the game balanced with the extra players and cards! If you find Bohnanza to be quite a bit of fun, as I do, and if you expect to play with 6 or 7, you can use this expansion as instructed with complete confidence that the game will be just as much fun as ever.

A Great Expansion that You Cannot Miss
April 23, 2000

If you want to play this expansion, the first thing is that you must have the original Bohnanza deck.

For the original Bohnanza, it is very suitable to 3-5 players. With the expansion set, it means more cards available for play and hence more players can now join the game. This can balance between the number of players and the number of cards.

If you have the original Bohnanza deck, you must have this expansion set and to have more fun to play this game with more players!

More Beans in the Field
September 16, 1999

This expansion is seamless, expanding the Bohnanza game without modifying the basic gameplay in any appreciable way.

We've been playing with this expansion for quite a while now, and if you want to add more players to your game, you'll need these new beans for your fields.

What? More beans?
August 02, 2000

Bohnanza--the freeform bean-trading game from Uwe Rosenberg--proved to be such a success that it was only a matter of time before there came an expansion. In fact, to date there have been two expansions and a spinoff. While the second expansion (La Isla Bohnit) is of dubious value at best, this first expansion is in my view invaluable.

The expansion simply allows two more players--up to seven--to participate in the game. Since the active player can trade with anyone, there is almost no downtime in Bohnanza, so seven players is not a problem. But even if you normally play with five or fewer, the expansion is not wasted, for the bean varieties that it adds are equally useful with as few as three players. With the expansion you have a much greater flexibility in the kinds of beans you grow. Don't like the ultra-rare beans? Don't use them. By selectively removing some bean varieties you can also alter the length of the game.

It's good to see that the English language edition of this game includes the cards from the basic game and this expansion, all in one box. As such, this expansion set is only of value to those who have the original German version from Amigo, but those people should consider this expansion a must.
