Wonderful, with one BIG proviso
February 12, 2001

The proviso is that this is NOT compatible with the new and wonderful Cosmic Encounter set from Hasbro/Avalon Hill. This is specific to the Mayfair edition, which is extremely hard to come by these days.

MCE adds a lot to the basic game, and players are invited to pick and choose between the new options. With the addition of Lucre, Moons, Kickers, Reinforcements, and a plethora of new aliens, you can customize the game to your heart's content. A worthy additon to the One True Game.

This is one cool expansion for one cool game. Find yourself a copy of Mayfair Cosmic Encounter on eBay if you don't have one. As it is out of print, yet, required to play the Mayfair More Cosmic Encounter. The game states that it supports up to 8 players; however, it is possible to support up to much more than that, provide that you make the extra game pieces needed.

A mixed bag of extras for the game
January 27, 1999

When Mayfair took over publishing the original Cosmic Encounter, they got the rights to the original Eon game and its 9 (!!) expansions.

They included material from the first couple of expansions into the first Mayfair release. More Cosmic Encounter has pretty much the rest of the expansions.

The new rules and aliens are basically a kit of optional rules to let you spice up your game. Use the ones you like, ditch the others.

The most requested is Lucre. Suddenly, you have to pay money for things like pulling your dead from the warp. Several new alien powers govern the flow of Lucre. You now have an economy and trading in the game, so this is a rather nice set of rules.

A lot more combat cards, including negative value cards.

A few extra flares.

Lots and lots of alien powers. Some are not very useful unless you are using certain optional rules, but the large number of new aliens keeps the game fresh. With new flares and aliens, some are very unbalancing--and Mayfair did not go through the work they did on the main game to balance powers.

Moons. These add extra 'planets' in each sector. The owner can activate a special power. Each moon's special power starts the game hidden. And the effects of powers vary wildly, to some that hand the game to the player who takes them. Produces the most chaotic CE games, but I personally find some moon powers to be game-wrecking.

Because of the sheer number of rules with all the new pieces, rule conflicts will also come up much more frequently. Could be a major problem with some gaming groups. So sometimes you get really strange games. And sometimes one player walks away with victory.

Basically, a worthwhile investment, especially for people who like to play with rules. Consider it a very nice starting toolkit for adding new rules to your game.
