Palabra is a great card game
August 01, 2002

Palabra is a card game using the letters of the alphabet with points for each letter and stars on some cards to double, triple, etc. the points. You have 7 cards to lay down a word for points, then others can lay letters on your word to make new words for points.

This game is easy to learn and easy to play even if you are not sharp. It is a lot of fun. My brother and his wife have the game -- we played it nearly every weekend with our own twist to it.

Great game! I'm addicted.

I've worn out two decks of cards and would like to find more cards. The game can be played with up to four people but 2 or 3 is optimal. It's similar to [page scan/se=0050/sf=category/fi=stockall.asc/ml=20]Scrabble but moves much faster with potential for large scores because of the multiplying effect of the stars on some cards. Great game!

Create short words and total your score

This is an interesting game for kids and adults too. Players create words from a hand of 7 cards where each card has a point value and a color and some cards have stars. Count up the point value of the letters and multiply by the number of stars. If all letters are the same color, multiply by 2. Besides words, you can build a flush or straight of 3 or more letters.

A fun twist is point-shaving where you match your opponent's card(s), shaving points off his/her score and on to yours. Then you get to replace your cards and take your normal turn.

I like this game because it's just as easy for a child to win as an adult. It also challenges children to use basic math skills to add and multiply the points.
