A story adventure game! Grump has taken the villagers' treasures and is now fast asleep at the top of the beanstalk. Together, players climb to the top to recover their treasures. Grump may not be wakened or he takes back everything. Players share the treasures and leave some behind for Grump. Their kindness will help change him. The game is won when everyone has some of the treasure.

We've been playing many of the Family Pastimes games at our co-op preschool since anyone can remember, and this is the one that all the kids - boys AND girls - really enjoy and will ask to play again and again. It is a great pleasure to watch the children discover this game is more fun when they play with each other, rather than against each other. Even worn-out adults enjoy this one.
I have used this game over and over with children teaching cooperation skills with great success. It teaches not only how cooperation can work to an individual's advantage, it also shows how kindness and generousity are more helpful in the end than not. I highly recommend this game to teachers and caseworkers alike.
First of all I want to make sure everyone knows this game is for preschoolers. Most preschoolers aren't into a lot of stratgy. They want a game that they can be involved in as much as possible.
In this game you roll the die then either take a token or add pieces to the Grump. My preschooler liked to do both. Everyone gets excited when the Grump starts to awaken and look for anyone to play a harp to put him back to sleep.
My daughter is now 6 but likes to play this with her 4 year old neice. I think the biggest test for how good a game is, is weather or not the kids want to play it. I have dozens of games she is old enough to play and that she enjoys playing but this game still gets requested. I would say that makes it a good childrens game.
As for cooperation, my daughter likes to make the Grump wake by not giving up harps knowing it bothers the other players. I've never (sob) been so proud of her the first time I saw her do this.
When I saw that this game was so highly rated, I was moved to dissent . . . and happily saw that the editorial reviewer had it exactly right. In theory, a fine game, and so well intentioned. But in practice, boring, shoddy, and without consequence. The message to my child: cooperation isn't any fun.
