An engaging challenge...

Of the Family Pastimes games we own, this is my wife's favorite. I enjoy it, too. There is always something to discuss, and it can be quite challenging.

Each player begins with several blocks of a particular color stacked in one corner of the board. Every player's goal is to move at least one of those blocks to the diagonally opposite corner. The blocks must move along a path that weaves back and forth across the board. This would be easy except for the fact that the other players are trying to do the same thing, and their paths intersect yours at many points. Inevitably there is a "traffic jam" in the middle of the board. Everyone must co-operate to get all the blocks past each other.

A player rolls two dice for each turn. The player may then move one piece the dice sum, move two pieces according to each die, or move one piece the amount showing on either die. Players may not pass single pieces belonging to another player. Only a "bridge" consisting of at least two blocks on one space may be passed. If a player cannot use a particular dice roll, the same total is passed to the next player. If no one can use the dice combination, all players lose.

The game requires good timing, co-operative discussion, and even sacrifice for the greater good. It becomes more difficult with more players. It is fairly easy for two to win, and much more difficult for four. Therefore, if two players want a challenge, each can take two colors. Players can also vary the difficulty by simply starting with more or less blocks.

I would recommend this game for both adults and children. It possesses the time-honored combination of simple mechanics and subtle strategies, while adding the idea of co-operation toward a common goal.
