Slapshot must be one of the funnest games ever made. Its really great and its a pity its not still in production. I mean its simple, fun and there is even some skill involved. You might have a great team but if they all go out injured well then you are not going to win the title. And to think i won the championship twice with The goon in my team!! I highly recommend this game!
This game is pure enjoyment. For US people there was a similar game known as 'Slapshot' which follows this format almost exactly. It's like a modified game of war, with special cards and a few suprises to make things a LOT more fun.
Each turn allows a player to play a one on one game with a player of their choosing or trade in a dismal card in hopes for a much more worthy card, or trade another player that has a solid team. It's great trying to build your team from start to finish while other try to injur, steal or beat your best players.
We have already bought three of these and going to order more in the future. The more players there is the more fun it is.
The reason it seperates from other games is because it comes down to a battle of wits. When that championship game roles around and its sudden death overtime, its all about which goalie is higher and in what order will your opponent play his best cards. If you can read the other person you can win. It's one of the best designed games to be fun for beginners and be increasingly fun each time one plays.
To this date this game is my favorite and I have played many of the previous #1 games, this game rules them all.
As described by Magma, Power Play is the latest edition of Phantoms of the Ice. Great for when you have five or more gamers over and are looking for a quick, involved game. Power Play is very similar to Avalon Hill's Slapshot (long out of print, but a convention favorite), except that it doesn't come with a board or scoresheet (a minor quibble at best).
Each player has a 'team' of three forwards, two defensemen, & one goalie. During your turn you may draft (discarding a card & drawing off the top of the deck), trade (pulling an opponent's card and replacing it with one of your own) or play a game (easy to do, difficult to describe). When one team wins 9 games, the playoffs begin.
The trading part is the great equalizer, since a powerful team can be reduced rather quickly this way.
Overall, a fun game that makes a finisher to a game night.
