Epaminondas is an abstract strategy game for 2 players. The game is named after the Greek officer Epaminondas from Thebes. In 371 BC, this officer used a new combat formation for the first time in the war against Sparta: The phalanx!
A phalanx was a military formation composed of several rows of foot soldiers, and was hard to overcome at that time. In this game, the phalanx represents a formation of two or more stones, which must break through the opponent's ranks in order to reach the opposite side of the board.
