"Midnight at the oasis..."
September 27, 1999

About thirty minutes from my hometown of Reno, Nv. lies Virginia City. For the last umpteen years, in September, the town celebrates 'Camel Racing Days!' It is a riotous weekend of fun and serious camel racing. So too, is 'Karawane'!

'Karawane' has a colorful, slightly cartoonish, gameboard, great camel pieces, and a unique three piece water jug that holds your bidding chits for the three rounds of racing. Players secretly bid 'x' number of chits, simultaneously, and move their camel forward so many spaces, depending on where they ranked in the bidding. The object is to collect the most silk bundles, awarded on the 'camel trail' and at the end of each race.

Fun, easy to teach, and straightforward play makes 'Karawane' a very likable family or party game. Play is quick and the skill involved around the game is knowing when to hang back in the bidding process, and when to press forward. Due to the small size of the bidding chits (little water jugs), you do need to keep an eye on them with younger players. Included in the game is a tournament version which offers a few more decision variables, if the basic game is just too simple for you.

Don't let too much sand get in your shoes!
