Lots of opportunities for backstabbing
September 12, 2001

This is one of those games where groups of 2 or 3 players frequently leave the room to secretly discuss plans and possible alliances. It can get quite intense with the right combination of players.

Like Diplomacy, everyone simultaneously writes out their moves in secret, but instead of trying to conquer Europe, you are all mob gangsters vying for a piece of the action and some turf in a fictitous city.

I almost gave it 5 stars, but settled on 4 because the game can be quite dull if players are reluctant to interact with one another. It really shines with 5 players, since real estate in the city is extremely limited, so back room deals are a requirement if you want to survive.

Another plus for the game is there's usually not one dominating player throughout a game. Money (the goal) is kept secret, and although weaker players will get knocked out along the way, the winner usually just barely edges out the 2nd and 3d place players. There are plenty of tension and suspense throughout!
