Product Description

Drive the freeways of the future -- where the right of way goes to the biggest guns. Players choose their vehicles -- complete with weapons, armor, power plants, suspension and even body style. Then they take them on the road... to come home as aces, or to crash and burn. If a driver survives, his abilities improve, and he can earn money to buy bigger and better cars. Advanced rules let players design their own customized cars, trucks and cycles.

Tabletop Mad Max
April 21, 2001

One of the most influential movies of the 1980s was 'The Road Warrior,' aka Mad Max II. It almost singlehandedly made Mel Gibson a star. It is set in a post-apocalyptic future where roving gangs of punkish bikers roam the deserts of the world (practically everywhere) looking for gasoline, which has become as precious as gold. The vehicle designs in the movie were wildly original, looking like dragsters cobbled together from some infernal junkyard.

Car Wars is an older board game that has stood the test of time to become something of a cult classic of its own. In it, players have the chance to design cars of their own from the ground up, including armor and weaponry. They work within a certain budget, and players invariably come up with wildly different designs. They can then engage in either highway or arena combat. The game turns are rather involved, but tend toward semi-realistic results. Trying to turn sharply at a high speed will probably flip the car, while a lower speed will make the turn easily. Cars take damage and eventually fail in this futuristic demolition derby. Winning drivers gain points that can be used for future upgrades to their vehicles or drivers.

There has been an underground following for this game for well over a decade. There are Car Wars leagues as well as entire storylines that have been developed. It has the feel of a miniatures game without needing to spend even a cent on an actual mini. Supplements are available that widen the game-world as well as providing newer and meaner weapons and vehicles. Recommended.

Fun game with realistic driving simulation
March 27, 2001

The first time I played this game I loved it! It gives you the ability to take cars, attach weapons, and combat--what more do you need? The movement and combat system is surprisingly realistic, and easy to learn. The only thing I feel that could make this game better would be to include diecast or plastic models for the cars instead of the cardboard punch-outs that come with it.
