Easily understood, but overly quirky for most players.
March 18, 2001

Many times, one can readily identify the base componants of a game: In this instance, Zoon is made up of equal parts Chess, Stratego, and Collectible Card Game.

Each package contains two complete armies, which are arranged, face-down, at each end of an imaginary 6x6 grid between the two players. This is the first quirk. Because the grid is imaginary, it becomes irritating to keep track of the two-card distance between the two armies. Each unit in your army moves differently, according to an easy to read movement grid printed on the face of the card. This is the second quirk: Because the cards are face-down, you have to do a lot of checking to see which card moves in what way. When one unit attacks an enemy unit, you remove both cards from the table, spin them face down, and you and your opponent point to a corner on the other's card. Turn the cards over, and whoever's card has the higher number showing defeats the other card. Fun, but quirky.

That said, the game itself is actually quite fun. I'm impressed at the amount of gameplay West End Games was able to cram into 33 tiny cards, and the artwork is simply beautiful. I can't fathom why the game is out of print: West End promised 2 new decks per month, and only 4 decks have come out at this point.
