When I played The Grand Campaign of the Empires in Arms, it took us more then 140 hours! This scenario starts at Jan 1805 and ends in Dec 1815, 120 months of game play. Some months took us 30 minutes; others, 3 hours. Once a month we gathered for 10 to 14 hours of non-stop gaming. So, you just can't compare this to anything else. This is hard stuff, perhaps only for crazy gamers. After plaing Empires, any other strategic game seems like Monopoly... believe it!
Since there is no review on this one, I have to put one.
The story is about the empire of Napoleon. The main actor may be France in this war, but each country has its specific qualities that make it necessary.
Let me put it this way: Empires in Arms is one of the most mind-twisted game ever. First, the rules are very complicated, but after experiencing a few, you may get used to them. Second, we used to play this game for more than a year FOR ONE GAME! At the strategy club of our school, we have been spending almost 20 minutes a day on it for a complete year, and even with that we could not finish it.
Don't even expect to sit around a table waiting for the others to play their turns. You just speak to your opponents when you have time in a quiet place in order to scheme your alliances and treasons.
For me, this is a great game: so deep and perfectly detailed, even for combat phases.
This game is divided in many parts: first the most important: politic. Then strategy, moves, fight, schedule, money, power, etc.
Probably the best game ever, but really too difficult and long for players that are not really into the game or just want to spend 2 hours to play. ;)
