My wife loves games with dice. There is something deeply satisfying to her in the clack and chatter of a bunch of dice hitting the table. 'Krakatoa' is a dice game that I actually enjoy playing with her because there is an actual element of skill and strategy to it.
The game is played with three trios of 12-sided dice, color-coded white, grey, and black. Each die has a single color dot on each side, either yellow (rarest), red, or blue (most common). Each player takes and rolls the dice for five rounds before turning them over to the next player. Choices during those five rounds can be agonizing.
The first roll of each round contains all five dice. On each successive roll, one trio of dice is rolled and must hit and change the face of at least one of the remaining six dice. Scoring is done on a trio by trio basis after each roll. A trio of unmatched dice will score nothing while a trio of yellows will score 10 points. Various combinations fall in between the extremes.
Players also try to reach certain point values or combinations of colors showing on all dice, which can lead to valuable bonus points. A player may, for example, shoot to break up a low-scoring 'volcano' in order to hit the valuable multiple-of-twenty breakpoint, thereby quadrupling the value of the next roll. The choices can be agonizing, and trying to hit only certain dice while leaving others alone is a test of dexterity and skill.
Krakatoa was marketed through a small Hawaiian company called Xanadu Leisure, and has long since disappeared from print. This brilliant little game is a keeper, and should you ever find it, I suggest picking it up. I only wish a large game company would acquire this title so more people could enjoy it. Highly recommended.
