Product Description

Note: While the future printings of Carcassonne will no longer contain the River expansion, these copies still do.

The southern French city of Carcassonne was founded on an important trade route between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Because of its strategic location, the city was often conquered and has known many rulers. As a result of this varied history, the city is famous for its unique mixture of Roman and Medieval fortifications.

The players develop the area around Carcassonne by placing land tiles. Each turn the area becomes larger as the players expand and add roads, fields, cities, and cloisters. The players may also deploy their followers as thieves, farmers, knights, and monks to control and score points for the roads, farms, cities, and cloisters. As the players have only a few followers, the wise player will plan his moves carefully and deploy followers when and where he can earn the most points.

If there is any game that will attract new players, Carcassonne is certainly it. Even if one ignores the multiple fascinating expansions, the basic game takes tile laying and makes it an art. Players feel as if they are actually building a large puzzle - with scattered cities and monasteries amongst a network of roads and fields. Placing "meeples," miniature people to claim these cities and farms, players must tactically attempt to control the biggest cities and longest roads. It plays well in multiplayer mode (up to five) but also makes a tremendous two-player game. It's simple, easy, and fun -- and most new players will ask to play it again immediately!

Fun and enjoyable but too much play is too much burn
January 03, 2018
I recently purchased this game and have played 5 times in 2 sessions. After the second session I grew burnt out of the strategy and competition aspect managing roads and cities, trying to undermine the other players. They now read my strategies but we all help each other gain points to fight each other. World building is phenomenal where every single game plays differently. Using the river first is a great random touch for the rest of the game and gives tons of options at the world building soon after. Building roads, competing with players for said roads is a delight as trying to grow it so long for points and then have to split the points in a tie or lose a number of claim tokens in order to not gain future points along other roads or cities is a great adventure to fight other players with. 4.5/5

My first foray into the real gaming world.
January 18, 2016

I purchased this game for a camping trip many years ago and now the box is starting to fall to pieces from over use. My wife and I play this game ALL the time and when we don't have the game close by we play the mobile app version. If i was to buy this again i would go straight and get the BIG BOX version. Everyone we play this with loves it and its really easy to teach. If you want to make it simpler than it already is you can remove the "fields" scoring mechanism and just score the roads, cities, and cathedrals. This is one of my top rated games now.

One of my all time favorite games to play
January 11, 2016

At first glance it seemed like it was more luck than strategy until you realize getting into the game that each random tile you pick up allows for so many options of getting ahead in the game that it's no longer about really drawing the right tile but the tactics you pursue with each tile you pick up whether it's to block your opponent, get extra points with roads, extend a farm for yourself, or maybe for build the biggest city and call it Walmart :D.
