Wargamers Rejoice!
January 12, 2001

Although I have always appreciated the historical content and attractive graphical presentation of GMT's ancient Great Battles of History (GBoH) line, I frankly did not play those titles due to the dense rulebooks, long play times, and overly detailed command/combat systems. Well that's all changed now--SimpleGBoH is a wonderful item that has brought an entire series of games back to life for me.

SimpleGBoH is not just a watered down version of Standard GBoH--it's more like a restructured and streamlined redesign that has somehow managed to retain full flavor while simultaneously easing play and reducing the amount of time it takes to complete a scenario. The level of testing and development here was outstanding.

However, be advised that 'Simple' is a real misnomer--this is a full fledged wargame, no doubt about it. Still, it is very accessible to anyone. The well laid out rules are a snap, though they need to be perused carefully to glean the key elements of the system.

Since SimpleGBoH requires ownership of any prior GBoH ancients title, a downside is that several of the covered games (SPQR, Great Battles of Alexander, and Caesar: Conquest of Gaul) are currently sold out. Hopefully GMT will reprinting them soon. In the meantime, enjoy the current title Cataphract, along with the still available Caesar: The Civil Wars (plus related modules) for tons of gaming excitement.

When enough participants are available and I'm in the mood for grand conquest, I'll play WarFrog's excellent Empires of the Ancient World. But when the tactical mood strikes (which has been quite often lately!) to lead Numidian Cavalry, march Macedonian Phalanx, unleash Roman Legions, or face thundering Barbarian hordes, SimpleGBoH is the game for me. Like consummating a long lost love, SimpleGBoH is a pure delight.

As an added benefit, this plays exceedingly well solitaire.

My highest recommendation goes out to this product--it's absolutely terrific.
