Product Description

G.O.O.T.M.U is an abbreviation for "Get-Out-Of-The-Maze-Unit". To win the game you must find and retrieve the 3 pieces to your GOOTMU, while making it as difficult as possible for the other players to get theirs.

GOOTMU is played on a number of 4x4 space tiles, which assemble into a random playing board. The number of tiles used depends on the number of players in the game. The board is a wrap-around board; if you leave on one side, you re-enter on the opposite side.

You get to decide where on the playing board your playing piece starts. Unfortunately, one of your opponents then decides where your 3 GOOTMUs are placed. Rest assured, your opponent will find the most difficult places on the board to put your GOOTMUs. Fortunately, you get to do the same thing to your opponent.

Good Concept -- Poor Execution
March 09, 2003

Move about an ever-changing board and collect your pieces of your controller. Watch for traps and don't get caught in a dead end tunnel of the Labyrinth.

I had played the 2 player version of this game with my significant other (read preliminary board game tester) and both of us found it enjoyable.

Then I made a mistake. I brought the game to our weekly games night. There were six of us around the board. Most of us couldn't get close enough to read the tiles. We actually had people changing seats so we could see the board and the pieces. When the time came to change the tiles by rotating them with the little cardboard bits on them the system broke down. People would end up knocking over other tiles and thus other players pieces. Moving out the tiles was as difficult a maneuver as the wishbone in 'OPERATION'.

The rules are clear and very detailed. There was only one turn where we weren't sure exactly what to do.

The game has a sense of humor and the rules as well as the pieces conveyed this to varying degrees. However, the quality of the game was not worth the $25.00 I paid for its collection of cardboard.

For a better maze game, try Master Labyrinth. It doesn't have as many pieces and challenges, but it is easier to learn, easier to play and does not require musical chairs to view the board.

If GOOTMU is reprinted, double the size of the tiles and provide a board to hold the tiles. So each move does no require total reassemble of the board as well as remembering where each player and all the special pieces were.

This game has great potential, but it needs a makeover.
