Palabra is a creative mix of words and poker, with double and triple scoring cards that multiply upon each other and multiply your score by 4, 6, 9, 12, 18--whatever.
Stuck with a "Q," an "X," or a "Z?" Don't make a word. Put them in a flush or a straight. Did your opponent just make a 300 point combination? Don't fret. Cancel it with the "joker." Or "shave" it, and steal any part of it for yourself.
That's Palabra. Words, poker... and so much more. A variety of ways to score.
Palabra is a card game using the letters of the alphabet with points for each letter and stars on some cards to double, triple, etc. the points. You have 7 cards to lay down a word for points, then others can lay letters on your word to make new words for points.
This game is easy to learn and easy to play even if you are not sharp. It is a lot of fun. My brother and his wife have the game -- we played it nearly every weekend with our own twist to it.
I've worn out two decks of cards and would like to find more cards. The game can be played with up to four people but 2 or 3 is optimal. It's similar to [page scan/se=0050/sf=category/fi=stockall.asc/ml=20]Scrabble but moves much faster with potential for large scores because of the multiplying effect of the stars on some cards. Great game!
This is a great game for people who like Scrabble, and for people who like word games in general. And this is a game where being the best speller/Scrabble player isn't going to guarantee a win! And a game that you can play with your kids, where they can beat you fair and square.
The cards have the letters of the alphabet on them, along with the appropriate Scrabble value. In addition each card also has 1 or 2 colors on it (red, blue, green, or yellow). Some cards also have 2 or 3 stars on them, which act as multipliers. There are also wild cards, which act as any color/letter, and jokers, which can cancel previous plays.
Each player starts with 7 cards. At the beginning of your turn, you clear your previous word. Thus, at any given time, a player will only have 1 word in front of him.
During your turn, before you play your word, you can 'shave' letters (and points) off of the player to your right, if you have the matching letter(s) in your hand; or you can cancel any player's word with the joker card.
Then you draw so that you are back up to 7 cards in hand.
For your turn, you can play any legal Scrabble word, or you can take another player's word by adding on to it to make a new legal word, or you can play a straight (at least 3 letters in sequence), or you can play a flush (5 cards of the same color). For words and straights, any stars that are on the cards multiply together, and then gets multiplied by the total letter value of the word or straight. Also, for words and straights, if all the letters played are the same color, it is considered color-locked, and is worth double!
There are a few other scoring items, but that's the basic idea. Game ends when the draw pile is empty and either all players have passed or 1 player goes out.
