Octi offers you the opportunity to create your own pieces, tailoring them to fit the needs of the strategic situation. Each eight-sided piece can take up to 256 different configurations, and pieces may stack together for virtually limitless permutations.
Every turn presents you with a trade-off. Move a friendly piece or make it stronger... or add a new piece to the board.

....and then there are times when you don't want illustrations, themes, or anything else beyond just well-crafted tactics and strategy. The advantage, of course, is that the designer is allowed to focus completely on making a great system of play, and that is what the designer of this game has done.
What is so gratifying about this game (and each of the other classic strategy games - go, chess, etc.) is that the game mechanics themselves are simple and obvious ('a pawn moves one space ahead'), but the gameplay is richly complex. Options seem endless, all choices are intriguing and make sense, and you are continually surprised by what your opponent does and how the tide turns. These are sure signs of a great game, and this is one.
Incidentally, I see that the new version has been colorized and plastified. Well.....it's still a great game.
This is the first game to capture my interest since I stopped playing chess 12 years ago. The rules are elegant and very simple to learn, yet the strategies are nuanced and sophisticated. Every time you master one part of the game, you'll realize that there are two more aspects that you do not have a grip on.
Definitely a good game for precocious kids, but more than engaging enough for experienced adults. Octi belongs in a very select pantheon of games with Chess and Go.
It is amazing how a game with a simple set of rules could have such complex strategy. The strategies and concepts found in Octi dwarf Chess. Concepts such as resource management, economy of force, trade-offs between speed and development, and more, are here. And this is just the basic 2 player game. There are also advanced rules for 4 player team play, and the introduction of a superpiece that gets an extra move. A must have, if you even remotely like abstract strategy games. Even if you just like a great strategy game, abstract or not, this game is definitely worth considering.
A best way to view this game is to imagine the determining direction of Ploy, mixed with the multipiece jumping of Chinese Checkers/Camelot/Inside Moves, with the ability to stack your pieces together from Domination. Then, throw in the unique concept of creating/improving your pieces.
This game's great flexibility and depth earned it first place in our abstract strategy category last year. Octi is somewhat similar to checkers, but has a key difference: A piece (or pod) must be equipped with a prong in order to be able to move at all, and then it can only move and jump in the direction of the prong. A whole turn must be spent to insert one prong into one pod or to relocate a prong. Once your pods are equipped, you can move them, jump them, or even stack them to await a later single-turn separation. Your ultimate goal is to claim victory by occupying your opponent's starting squares. Several suggested variations add even more spice. Octi for Kids, sold separately, is an ideal introduction to the game's novel mechanics, challenging children and adults alike.
The distinguishing characteristic of this splendid game is its elegance: simple rules offering great depth and flexibility. Pieces, called pods, are initially immobile and must be given the power to move. You accomplish this by inserting prongs into any of their eight sides. Pods can only move, or jump like crazed checkers, in the direction of any prong. Jumped enemies may be taken as POWs, but sometimes it is better to leave them be. Turns consist of inserting a new prong, changing a prong's direction, moving a pod, or jumping one or more pods (enemy or friendly).
Players start with three empty pods on designated squares. The first to occupy the enemy starting spaces wins. Pods may be stacked and moved together, and can later separate. As in many checkers variations, every move is potentially treacherous, and you must arm your pods to cooperate effectively. There is nothing funny about an eight-pronged attack. Geniuses who find even this too simple can try the Edgeless Board, in which pods may exit one edge and reappear on the opposite. There is even a four-player version and a "super prong variant." Wow!
