This is a very nice chess set indeed. The pieces are big, detailed and very well painted. They are also perfectly recognizable as chess pieces: Homer and Marge as King and Queen, eight small Bart Simpsons as pawns, and Maggie over a toy horse (obviously a knight). The rulesheet says that Lisa is the bishop and Grandpa' Simpson is the rook, but I strongly suggest to switch them: Grandpa Simpson looks more like a bishop than Lisa! Overall, the pieces are nice and practical; the only drawback I found on them is that they can fall easily due to their small base, but in practice it's not a problem at all.
With such a nice set of pieces, it is really a shame that the included board is so bad. It's made with very thin cardboard that curves easily... the layout is terrible: it uses ugly colors (blue and green, with a black frame), and the spaces are not perfect squares, but rectangles; this is really unimportant, however, the spaces are very small in relation to the pieces' size; as a result, the board with pieces looks crowded, making it very difficult to play on it. A bigger chessboard is a must if you want to play with these pieces.
So, I will give a 4-star score to the pieces, 1-star to the board... that makes a 3-star overall score.
