Product Description

There is a persistent legend that on this three major voyages, Captain Cook used this game nightly to relax with his fellow shipmates... naturalist Sir Joseph Banks and botanist Daniel Solander. Cook spent so much time playing the game, it came to be known as The Captain's Mistress Game. The object of the game is simple, yet the strategies are endless. Players try to line up four of their hardwood "rounds" in a row, either horizontally, vertically or diagonally. the cabinet is beautifully made, with brass fittings, burlwood inlay on top, mitered joints and a lustrous, stained finish. At game's end, pull the bottom retaining "gangplank" and the hardwood "rounds" drop back into the cabinet.

The beautiful wood and the high quality of the game-makers' craftsmanship contribute to the wonder of this timeless game. The game itself appears easy ... but after spending many happy hours of playing this game: calculating strategy, laughing, doing research on tangential aspects of the game (such as it's history and mathematical possibilities), our family has unanimously decided that the Captain's Mistress is a rollicking success story!

Thank you for providing this marvelous game!

This game is a classic. It's fun for adults to play with children, children with children, and adults with adults! It sits on our coffee table and is beautiful in its wooden simplicity. This game will last decades and decades. It really is a wonderful game. (Try playing the 'speed' version, where you're not allowed to think! A guaranteed laugh!)

Some many feel it is a glorified connect four; come now, Connect four is a cheap copy of the cap's Mistress. Yes it is a goodly deal more in cost than the plastic framed ( easily broken ) , checker pieced connect four, but if you are going to buy this games it is not only for the great and timeless playability but for the fact it is built like the 'true' game, and it is handsome in it's construction. Thank you.
