Konane (Ko-nah-nay) has been a popular board game in Hawaii for hundreds of years. Kamehameha the Great, the king who united all the Hawaiian Islands into one kingdom in the early 1800's, was considered an expert Konane player. The Hawaiians used whatever natural materials that were available to play the game: a board was made from koa wood or carved in a large flat lava rock, and pieces were generally fashioned from shells. pebbles or bits of coral from the beach.
Konane closely resembles checkers, however, the object of the game is not to capture opponent's men but to maneuver the opponent into a position where he cannot move on his next turn.
