In Settlers of Catan, groups of settlers try to become the dominant group on a remote island by building settlements and cities across its uncharted wilderness. Each player tries to guide their settlers to victory by clever building and trading. Building is based on resources that you gain based on where you build and the roll of the dice. This combination of strategy and luck makes Settlers an excellent game for players of all skill levels.
This edition of Settlers comes with plastic model playing pieces and a sturdy cardboard frame to hold the board together.
- 19 hexagonal region tiles
- 6 board frame pieces
- 20 settlement pieces (5 x 4 different colors)
- 16 city pieces (4 x 4 different colors)
- 60 road pieces (15 x 4 different colors)
- 95 resource cards
- 25 development cards
- 4 building cost cards
- 2 special bonus cards
- 18 die cut counters
- 2 six sided dice
- 1 plastic robber pawn

My wife is not really a gamer. But, she actually requests to play a game of this with me almost nightly! It has decent strategy, but does have an ample amount of luck (due to dice rolls) involved. Forget having to have 3 or more people. We play just fine with 2 people, though trading rarely occurs.
Also note that the game is very nice as well with 4 people playing. Another couple has joined us several times just to play this game. (though, it seems better when played with the expansion set which is rated for from 5-6 players).
Final note - get the German Version over the American Version. It is visually much more beautiful than the cheaply made and not supported tile pieces found in the Americanized version. It does come with an English translation of the rules and cards - which you'll learn soon enough through repetition of playing a few times.
We really like this game...noticed that a lot of people didn't like the two-person game...not sure what the actual rules for the two-person game are 'cause we've been using a dutch version and can't read the rules (we were taught by our friend)..but we made up a two-person version that we think is reasonable...Each player plays two colors, alternate placing of towns and taking turns, player cannot trade with himself but can use monopoly card to transfer a resource, play each color to 7 points...
Siedler has definitely turned into a favorite between me and my friends. We are so hooked on this game, that we have already purchased the expansion set to allow more than 4 people to play. The interesting thing about the expansion set is that the rules change a bit, so the game goes much faster.
We have the German edition, which we think compared to the English version, is much more colorful. But I guess if you cannot read German, you might have a problem.
