Attack or retreat? Everyone who dares, wins. And who has the top hat, is not safe for long. Many other hats snatch, without being grabbed: Tactics without a bit of lucky dice rarely works. A tricky game full of tension and chance with five variants.

Fang den Hut is one of the best games ever invented! Really.
August 04, 2010

We first bought this game around 1995 while we were living in Germany. We are a huge game playing family, from chess, Risk, Carcassonne, Monopoly, Blokus, Rummikub, charades and Apples to Apples to Uno. You can see the variety. When our son was young we found Fang den Hut to be a great way to learn how to count when playing a game, and also how to handle winning one moment and then losing the next. For such a simple game, one experiences wonderful moments that teach deferred gratification, strategy, and patience, with a little luck and many surprises thrown in. Fang den Hut has more variety than Trouble (another good beginner game for kids), which makes it a bit more engaging for adults to play with younger kids. Any time we have introduced this game to new people they are charmed by it.

We have both the current version of the game as shown here, and also the first, smaller version with the interlocking 3-part game board, which is great for travel. I wish Ravensburger would bring the first one back, as the graphics are terrific, and it is a handy size. I also wish this were more readily available in the US. I can see why it is on backorder; it will be worth the wait!
