Product Description

Between 1845 and 1870, many expeditions were penetrating the heartland of Africa. Names like Burton, Speke, Baker and Livingstone are set is stone: they became true heroes of the modern world. As manager of a colonial trading company, you initially have only limited resources. Each round, a bidding structure decides the order of turns. Although bidding is costly, rewards may be rich. Resources, conflict, choice of actions, wholesale trading and players’ reputations are all matters of concern in this smooth and fast playing game.

Risk without the luck factor
August 16, 2005

Great game, difficult to learn but well worth it. It has interesting mechanisms, e.g. to decide who leads the turn, to allocate the spending of one player amongst the other players, and for conflicts. Very enjoyable.

Worth learning
August 01, 2005

This game is relatively complicated, but really enjoyable and well worth the effort of understanding the rules. It combines various mechanisms (auctions, conflicts, control of zones, influence, specialization in one resources, alternating roles, etc.), so that the players always need to evaluate their options, whether to compromise on the reputation, trading influence, victory points, etc. The conflict resolution is very clever, with little luck involved, especially compared to Risk. Enjoy!

Overly Complicated
November 07, 2005
This game wouldn't be so bad except it takes 4 people over two hours to complete it when they're learning (and that was not counting setup or rule reading.) Turns take forever unless you know what you are doing so teaching this game is really a drag. I'm sure the more you play this game the more fun you would have, but finding people patient enough to learn it could prove a challenge.
