The thrill is gone (somewhat)
January 30, 2006
Scene It (TV Edition) is a TV version of the Movie original. I rated the Scene It (Movie Edition) 4 stars, but I have to revert to 3 for the TV edition. Perhaps you think that I don't like TV as much as I do Movies, but that's really not the case. The reason this version, the Junior edition, and the Disney edition lose a star is because I am reviewing them several months later.

As I've said before, I really like DVD games. The idea of adding TV clips to trivia is very enjoyable. The problem is just the nature of the Scene It franchise. What I like about the game is watching the TV clips. What I don't like about the game is reading the questions on the cards. It just feels too much like an average ordinary trivia game.

So without going into too much detail, let me just list some pluses and minuses:

  1. TV edition still involves more card reading than clip viewing (Shout About TV is much better).
  2. TV edition is more widely enjoyed by my circle of friends because more people watch TV on a regular basis, than they do movies.
  3. The clips are usually a lot of fun, and make for an entertaining time, that's why this game still retains 3 stars.

A note on this and other Scene It games: Some DVD players do not possess a randomizer, so the clips will always play in the same order. The TV edition is the first in the series that was set up so that you can choose different chapters during setup. This makes it so you don't have to worry about repeating clips. This was a big bonus when playing at my dad's house, since his DVD won't randomize at all and we were always seeing the same clips.
