Another Neat Puzzle Toy!
January 20, 2007

Ok, so I think they made this 4x4 cube back in the 80s or early 90s as a follow up puzzle to the classic 3x3 cube? But I'm not sure, I only vaguely recall seeing it way back then. Anyway I think the reasoning behind it was, because the 3x3 was so easily solved (eventually) by so many people and in under a few seconds at times, that a harder puzzle was required. Even with over 400 Quintillion combinations (that's a lot) the 3x3 cube was eventually defeated by very brainy types, in under a minute. Which in itself is amazing, but I've seen people solve it their toes in under a minute!!!! Now THAT IS truly amazing, and with 1 extra layer now added in, it must take those brainy types what, 2 minutes now?

Well I've never solved this one, no intentions of scrambling it to find out if I can either. I know how to solve the 3x3 by dismantling it and putting it back together, and I'm quite sure the method is the same for this one too. I recall when getting my first 3x3 that the box suggested putting a thin layer of VaselineĀ® inside the edges of the cube for easier movement of the puzzle planes. I suggest you do the same with this cube too. The extra layer causes it to "hang up" when spinning the planes. The same goes for the 5x5 too, it hangs up even more than the 4x4. It's a neat toy, game, puzzle, and for whatever reason you decide to buy it, you're making a good purchase. An excellent brain teaser that is, durable, colorful, fun to mess with, and probably a frustration to solve, but highly worth it. I got it for sentimental value, and you can't put a price on sentiment.
