Product Description

Match of the Penguins is a preposterous preponderance of penguin puffery. What are the big, bedecked birds doing on the beach? Enjoying themselves, just as we hope you will as you sharpen your reflexes and quick scanning skills in this fast-moving game.

Think all penguins look alike? Better look again in this fast-playing game of colorful confusion. Turn over cards and try to find a pair of penguins with common features. Be the first to shout out a match and collect all the cards. Watch out for multiple matches and sneaky double fish. And if you spot two identical penguins, run -- don't waddle -- to grab a penguin pawn before they disappear! The player with the most cards wins. Cool? Very cool.

Absolutely hilarious!
December 11, 2003

In this gorgeously produced little game, players compete to identify matching characteristics on a series of cards. Each round, one player takes the role of card-turner and begins turning up cards one at a time. The cards depict varioius pheasants all dolled up for a party, but importantly, no two pheasants should be admitted wearing similar outfits. So the player's task is to identify matching items as they appear like, for example two pheasants with green scarves. Sounds simple enough, but the cards are sufficiently visually confusing to make it pretty tricky, especially when there are five other players sitting around trying to see the matches first. But that's not all there is to it. When you see different types of matches, you have to respond differently. In other words, if one item matches, you have to call it out. If you're right, you take all the cards turned up this round for a point apiece. But if there are two matching items, you have to snatch one of three precious blue pawns. If the cards are completely identical, you have to grab the singular red pawn. And if a pheasant card comes up with two worms on it, you have to knock on the table. Take the wrong action and you lose points. This game elicited more laughter from my first couple of sessions (all adults) than I ever experienced during a game. It was bad enough to try to see the match, but it was surprisingly tricky to get the right words out of your mouth when you've been staring at all of these different elements of the cards. Many a pawn flew halfway across the room, and several players left with swollen knuckles from knocking too vigorously. A hilarious and exhausting game. Highly recommended for children and/or adults! And heck, if you end up not liking it, it's worth the low price just to have the cute little box it comes in gracing your shelves.
