Welcome to Tricky Town! Feel the joy and fun of Halloween trick or treating as you move your family of 2 parent pieces and 2 child pieces that move around the board attemmpting to collect the most treats and all the while trying to trick your opponents instead of being tricked yourself! You will be encouraged to think and be creative as you choose your moves among many options with endless strategies that could change every time someone moves.
Tricky Town is a great game. Your family can enjoy the adventure of tricker treating all year long. Not only is the game fun, it also challenges players to use their thinking skills to find the best way to get the most treats. Our family adds to the excitement by dressing up and making good use of those costumes we pay so much for and usually use them once. The game is also educational and teaches children the importance of safety while tricker treating. I highly recommend this game. We love it!!
This game won the games magazine best family game award in 2007, so I thought we would purchase it and give it a try. We have about 5 or so games that we regularly play and quite a few others that hardly get played at all. I was hoping that this game would become one of our regulars, but it fell into the latter category.
The gameplay is pretty basic, but some of the rules can be complicated or tricky, especially for younger players. I think the overall theme of the game is a good theme that most kids will enjoy, however, the gameplay itself isn't quite as exciting. The cards and the board do have some nice detail on them as well, however with the look of the game, somehow I am reminded of CandyLand or Chutes And Ladders. Also the character pieces could have been made better. They are just generic character pieces and for some reason they aren't even dressed in costumes, which is odd since they are supposed to be out trick or treating.
I think this game is a good game to play on a game night where you will be playing several other board games, but other than that I would just rate it as being average or maybe a little above average. The younger kids will also enjoy it more than the older kids, but it is only rated for ages 8 and up, so kids under the age of 8 would have trouble playing it. I think it is well suited for 8 to 11 year-olds.
Perhaps we will enjoy playing it more when it gets closer to Halloween. I think if you do like the previous reviewer suggested and dress up in Halloween costumes to play, this game may be a little bit more fun to play.
Usually you can judge a game the first time you play it how well you will like it. The first time we played this game, it didn't really hold the kids interests...especially the teenager, and the wife and I were not overwhelmed with the idea to play it again either because there just wasn't anything really exciting or special about it. Don't get me wrong the game can be fun at times and I think our younger daughter who is 10 years old enjoyed it more than the rest of us, but I also think there are other family games out there that are a lot more fun. For instance, if you are looking a good one I would recommend 1313 Dead End Drive over this one.
Overall I would say this is an ok family game, but not one you or the kids will be eagerly excited to play over and over again.
